artnet Auctions is proud to feature Paper Trail: Modern and Contemporary Works on Paper, an auction of unique paper-based works by Modern and Contemporary artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Edgar Degas, Vincent Van Gogh, Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, and Keith Haring. The works in the sale have estimates ranging from US$2,500 to over 100,000.

The sale will feature Personnages (Figures), an early charcoal and crayon drawing by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). Estimated at US$80,000 to 100,000, the work presents a lively street scene executed with bold, deft strokes in a reduced palette of browns and blues. In tone and theme, Personnages (Figures) is typical of Picasso's sketches of urban life from 1900 to 1901, the time leading up to the artist's celebrated Blue Period. This drawing has been authenticated by both the artist's daughter, Maya Widmaier-Picasso, and the artist's son, Claude Ruiz-Picasso.

Another highlight of the sale is a charcoal, acrylic, and collage on paper work by Rita Ackermann (Hungarian, b.1968). If the Phone is Ringing Don't Pick It Up, estimated at US$8,000 to 10,000, is a characteristically witty and provocative representation of gender, composed in the vivid style for which Ackermann is best known. Dating from 1994, the piece blends cartoon girls with hand-lettering, layers of bright green and yellow paint, and appropriated photographic images of girls on the phone.

The sale also includes a unique silkscreen self-portrait by Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) dating from 1977. Estimated at US$75,000 to 100,000, Self-Portrait is a compelling study in which two images of the artist's face-one staring downward, and one meeting the viewer's gaze-are evocatively superimposed.

Paper Trail: Modern and Contemporary Works on Paper will be live on artnet Auctions from June 18 through 25, 2013, and on view here.
