According to report by Deadline.com, ABC Family will be turning the story of Constance McMillen into a movie. A recent topic of national conversation, McMillen is a teenager from Mississippi who was recently barred from attending her high school prom.

In March 2010, the Itawamba County School District board made international news after it decided to cancel the prom for Itawamba Agricultural High School because 18-year old lesbian student Constance McMillen had requested permission to take a same-sex date to the event, and to wear a tuxedo.  On March 10, 2010, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a free speech lawsuit on McMillens's behalf, seeking an injunction which would reinstate the prom. On March 23, 2010, U.S. District Court Judge Glen H. Davidson issued a ruling in favor of both McMillen and the Itawamba County School District

The film is still in its Early Stages of developement, and is being headed by openly gay producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron along with Sony Pictures TV. Ghost Whisperer's John Gray will write the screenplay and might also direct.

Zadan and Meron, who run Storyline Entertainment produced the blockbuster Hairspray and the critically acclaimed Chicago, which was the first musical in 34 years to win the top honor of Best Picture Oscar at the 2002 Academy Awards, and are currently working on the highly anticipated Footloose remake. They won GLAAD Media Awards for Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story and for What Makes A Family.  Additional film credits include: Brian's Song, Martin & Lewis, and White Irish Drinkers.  The duo has also produced the current Broadway hit PROMISES, PROMISES as well as the upcoming revival of HOW TO SUCCEED... featuring Daniel Radcliffe
