York Symphony Orchestra Presents 'When In Rome' The York Symphony Orchestra will present When In Rome on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York. This is the fourth performance of the 2017-2018 season, World Tour: A Musical Voyage Around the Globe, and the second in the classical series. Single tickets starting at $9 for adults and $5 for students are available online at www.YorkSymphony.org and by calling 717-846-1111.

The second stop on the world tour includes musical selections either inspired by Italy or written by Italian composers. The York Symphony Orchestra will open the concert with Capriccio Italien in A major by Tchaikovsky followed by Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, featuring renowned Italian pianist Roberto Plano.

Plano has performed with orchestras all over the world in Italy, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. An accomplished musician, Plano has won numerous awards at competitions including the Cleveland International Piano Competition, Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Honens International Piano Competition and Dublin International Piano Competition. Plano has also been a featured recitalist at internationally acclaimed festivals such as the Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Festival in Italy and the Chopin Festival in Poland.

"When In Rome celebrates the music inspired by the beauty and passion of Italy," said Lawrence Golan, the Jody & Louis Appell, Jr. Music Director and conductor of the York Symphony Orchestra. "I am looking forward to the evening's repertoire and introducing the talents of pianist Roberto Plano to our audiences in this breathtaking concert."

The evening's concert also includes Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome, symphonic poems written by Respighi. Each piece is a suite of four movements. Fountains of Rome portrays a different one of Rome's fountains throughout the course of the day beginning with daybreak and finishing at sunset. Similarly, the movements of Pines of Rome depict pine trees in different areas of the city.

Guests of the Classical Series concerts for the 2017-2018 season will also enjoy free post-concert receptions based on the theme of the concert. After When In Rome, guests may sample an array of desserts from Tutoni's Restaurant. The reception is free to concert guests.
