WFUV Radio's Annual Gala Set for 5/9

An iconic trio of music, news and sports broadcasting legends will be honored on Thursday, May 9, at WFUV Radio's Annual Gala 2013.

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and author, Rosanne Cash, will be feted as WFUV's "Artist of the Year"; Sam Donaldson, veteran reporter/anchor and ABC contributor, will receive the Charles Osgood Lifetime Achievement Award in Broadcast Journalism; and sportscaster and commentator Bob Costas will receive the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting at the station's sixth annual gala.

Also to be honored with a Community Service Award is the The Agnes Varis Charitable Trust, established by Agnes Varis to support affordable access to the arts, education, and healthcare.

The benefit in support of New York's "Rock and Roots" public radio station, licensed to Fordham University, will be held at the Edison Ballroom in New York City. Attendees will be treated to a performance by Rosanne Cash.

Cash is one of America's pre-eminent singers and songwriters. With 12 albums and 11 number one singles to her credit, she has navigated her own path between country and rock, roots and pop, for more than 30 years. Writing songs that are finely-wrought vignettes, both highly personal and universally appealing, she is the keeper of an extraordinary family legacy, the eldest child of Johnny Cash and stepdaughter of June Carter Cash.

As a prose writer, she has published a collection of short stories, a children's book, and a critically praised memoir, and she has had essays and fiction appear in various collections and publications. For her contributions, not just to music, but also contemporary arts and culture, WFUV is pleased to honor her as our 2013 Artist of the Year.

Lifetime Achievement Awards Named for Famed Station Alumni

In lasting tribute to legendary broadcasters Charles Osgood and Vin Scully, both of whom started their careers at WFUV, the station established two annual Lifetime Achievement Awards in their names.

A multiple award-winning sportscaster, Bob Costas has been on the air for NBC Sports television since the early 1980s. He has been prime-time host of a record 9 Olympic games. Bob Costas has won 24 Emmy awards - more than any sports broadcaster. His versatility has been recognized with awards and nominations in the categories of hosting, play-by-play, writing, journalism, news, and entertainment. He is the only person ever to have won Emmys in news, sports, and entertainment. His news Emmy was awarded for his interview with Jerry Sandusky, the central figure in the Penn State scandal. His entertainment Emmy came in 1993 for his acclaimed late night program "Later with Bob Costas."

A 46-year ABC News veteran, Sam Donaldson has served with ABC News from 1967 to the present. He is best known as the network's White House Correspondent (1977-89 and 1998-99) and as a panelist and later co-anchor of the network's Sunday program, "This Week."

Costas and Donaldson were nominated and selected by well-known colleagues in their respective fields, many of whom also began their careers at WFUV.

The annual gala, now in its sixth year, has raised more than $2 million for WFUV (90.7 FM, www.wfuv.org). These much-needed funds enable WFUV, a public radio station broadcasting from Fordham University in The Bronx, to provide a unique blend of music, news and sports services, and to train the next generation of broadcasting talent. Previous WFUV gala honorees include Paul Simon, Emmylou Harris, Levon Helm, Dick Enberg, the late Ernie Harwell, Jim Lehrer, Tom Brokaw, Scully and Osgood.

Supporting Access to the Arts and More

The Community Service Award recipient, the Agnes Varis Charitable Trust, supports affordable access to the arts, education, and healthcare. The trust is named in honor of Agnes Varis, a business leader, who co-founded two pharmaceutical companies. Varis supported organizations working with the underprivileged, in education, the arts, and the welfare of animals, believing that doing so uplifted both the individual and the community.

WFUV Radio's Annual Gala 2013 will begin with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., followed at 7:00 p.m. by dinner, entertainment, and a live auction of music and sports memorabilia, travel and other valuable items. The Gala will be held at Edison Ballroom, 240 West 47th St., in New York City. Attire is "festive." Individual tickets are $1,000 and $2,500; tables are $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 and $75,000.
