BroadwayWorld.com is excited to introduce its newest blogger - VP Boyle!

VP BOYLE is one of the most sought after Broadway audition and life coaches for professionals in New York City and works with actors at every level across the country to spread his irreverent approach to theatrical wellness. VP currently serves as the creator and Chair of the New York Film Academy's new cutting-edge Musical Theatre & Film Conservatory Program. There are a few things in life that really incite me to rage. Littering, lame passive/aggressive communication, condescension and piss-poor-customer-service-by-people-who-recite-scripts-and-do-not-use-the-gray-matter-located-in-their-skulls. Can you tell I'm serious?

Breathe in. Breathe out.

All jokes aside, we all have our pressure points that are ego-driven and push us into "the unfortunate place." When that occurs, we can become completely ineffective and self-absorbed. If you haven't reached the level of Ghandi yet in this lifetime, I invite you to my "48 Hour Rule" of processing emotionally-charged information and situations. This technique works great with bosses, lovers, co-workers, stage managers and MTA booth attendants.

It's simple: Wait 48 hours and see how you feel.

No joke, that's it. Get through two full days with the clear intention of tabling whatever topic is making you insane until that time. Particularly if you are one of those folks that talks incessantly about your latest audition drama or why everyone has it better than you. Blech. If you find yourself constantly in "crisis-mode" or "drama-central" than you have to implement a strategy to step back from your chaos and gain some subjective stance on your worldview. If you are still in a tizzy about something after 48 hours, deal with it through proper channels: direct communication. NOT email, text messages and voicemail. Be a grownup and navigate your hotspots. Communication is getting more and more difficult with every technological advance and there is a definite trend towards cowardice and being small. If you want to show up to yourself and others, you will have to learn sooner or later how to be a better communicator. The best communicators ask LOTS of questions and leave the emotional spew aside. It's not easy and it takes practice. Your longest relationships may be the hardest in this arena because of historical patterns, but you can change them or decide whether or not they are worth your energy. Next time you are feeling yourself in the flushed-face-space, give yourself 48 hours to see if it really is worth the life force you are spending on the topic.
