The film adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo's 19th-century French fable of social injustice, is set for its big screen release December 14, 2012.

Under the direction of Tom Hooper, Hugh Jackman stars as Jean Valjean alongside Sacha Baron Cohen as Thernardier, Eddie Redmayne as Marius, Aaron Tveit as Enjolras, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Samantha Barks as Eponine, and Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier. Original stage stars Colm Wilkinson, Frances Ruffelle and others also appear.

LES MISERABLES premiered on Broadway on March 12, 1987, at The Broadway Theatre. Colm Wilkinson and Frances Ruffelle reprised their roles from the London production. The musical ran through October 1990, when it moved to the Imperial Theatre. After 6,680 performances in sixteen years, it closed in 2003. Only three years after the original run closed, Les Misérables began a limited return to Broadway in 2006 at the Broadhurst Theatre.
