Singer/songwriter Michael Cerveris' career straddles the disparate worlds of theatre and indie rock. Tonight, joined by a powerful rock band plus string quartet, Cerveris focuses on material from his ferocious and fragile solo debut album, dog eared, which "...turns pathos into pop redemption" (Amplifier). The Tony Award-winning actor and rock musician Cerveris -- former frontman of British band Retriever (Hinterlands) and the U.S. group Lame, as well as touring guitarist/vocalist on Bob Mould's '98 US/UK "Dog and Pony Show" sojourn -- originated the title role in the Broadway hit Tommy and in the late 90s, he starred in the smash cult hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch on London's West End, in New York Off-Broadway, and in Los Angeles, and most recently, on Broadway in Sondheim and Weidman's "Assassins".
On his new deeply personal and passionate album, recorded with friends including Corin Tucker and Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney, Laura Cantrell, The Posies' Ken Stringfellow and Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley, Cerveris highlights his versatile hook-filled songwriting, emotionally resonant vocals and subtle arrangements. "...this is the very model of the modern Breakup Record…with its emphasis on acoustic guitars, uncertain melodies and hushed, tremulous singing, Dog Eared most recalls the work of the late Elliott Smith." -Time Out NY www.cerveris.comVideos
