Tony Winner Sophie Okonedo in Talks to Lead THE CRUCIBLE on Broadway Next Year; Ivo van Hove to Direct?
The Daily Mail revealed this evening that Tony winner Sophie Okonedo is in talks to star in THE CRUCIBLE on Broadway next year, helmed by Ivo van Hove.
Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE centers on the SALEM witch trials in Massachusetts in the early 1690s. It premiered on Broadway in 1953 and won the Tony for Best Play.
Okonedo won a Tony Award for her role in last year's Broadway revival of A RAISIN IN THE SUN. She has also appeared in the West End in HAUNTED CHILD and at the National in TROILUS AND CRESSIDA.
Among her film credits are HOTEL RWANDA, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES, the TV movie MRS. MANDELA, as well as the miniseries TSUNAMI: THE AFTERMATH and the TV drama CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
The actress will soon appear in THE HOLLOW CROWN miniseries.
The Daily Mail also writes that Okonedo will star as a Director of Public Prosecutions in the upcoming BBCOne six-part thriller UNCOVERED from Peter Moffat, who also wrote CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
Belgian director Ivo van Hove, who has done a wide range of work in the Netherlands, won two Obie Awards for his off-Broadway productions of MORE STATELY MANSIONS and HEDDA GABLER. Among his other credits are THE LITTLE FOXES, THE MISANTHROPE, ALICE IN BED, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, all at the New York Theatre Workshop.
