Tony Award Nominee Hugh Martin Dies at 96

Tony Award and Academy Award nominee Hugh Martin died in California of natural causes on Friday, March 11. He was 96.

Martin's bet known work was the MGM musical "Meet Me in St. Louis," which he co-wrote the score for and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song for "The Trolley Song." He received a Tony nomination for Best Score when the film was turned into a musical which ran on Broadway in 1989.

Martin received three Tony nominations after his work on the musical HIGH SPIRITS in 1964. The musical was adapted from Noel Coward's BLITHE SPIRIT and Martin collaborated on the book, music and lyrics. Martin also wrote the Broadway musicals MAKE A WISH and BEST FOOT FORWARD.

As an actor, Martin's Broadway credits included HOORAY FOR WHAT. He provided vocal arrangements for many additional Broadway musicals including THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, GOOD NEWS and SUGAR BABIES. 

Martin also received an Academy Award nomination for "Pass the Peace Pipe" from the film version of GOOD NEWS in 1974.
