The New Group Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary with Benefit

The New Group will celebrate the its anniversary with 10 Years Off-Broadway, a spring benefit hosted by Kristen Johnston (Aunt Dan and Lemon, The Women) and Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City, The Women, The Heidi Chronicles) at Copacabana on Monday, July 13th.  

The evening will honor New Group founding board member Michael Mendelson and will feature original performances from the casts of Avenue Q and Hurlyburly, both currently representing The New Group on New York stages.  In addition, the evening will feature musical performances by John Cullum (On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, Urinetown) and Nellie McKay (the best-selling album Get Away From Me, the upcoming Roundabout revival of The Threepenny Opera).  The benefit will also feature silent and live auctions, boasting an array of sensational prizes.

A VIP cocktail reception will kick off the benefit at 6:30 PM, to be followed by dinner and dancing to the Peter Duchin Orchestra at 8:30 PM.  At 9 PM, the tribute, performances and live auction will begin.

The New Group received the 2004 Tony Award for Avenue Q. The company is represented Off-Broadway by the Presnyakov Brothers' Terrorism  (a co-production with The Play Company) and the commercial transfer of David Rabe's HurlyburlyHurlyburly received several Drama Desk nominations (including Outstanding Revival & Outstanding Director of a Play – Scott Elliott) and Lucille Lortel nominations and was recognized by the Drama League. 

The New Group launched its 2004-2005 season with Michael Murphy's Sin (A Cardinal Deposed) directed by Carl Forsman and starring Cullum (Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Play), which was honored with an Obie and received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Play.  This season marked the debut of a second production division of the company, The New Group (naked).  Helmed by Founding Artistic Director Scott Elliott & Executive Director Geoff Rich, The New Group is a theatre-in-residence at Theatre Row.  10 Years Off-Broadway marks the anniversary of their first production, Mike Leigh's Ecstacy.

Copacabana is located at 560 West 34th Street.
