Disney's The Lion King, celebrating its 10th year of sold out performances, has set a new box office record at the Minskoff Theatre by grossing $1,466,908.67 during the eight-performance week of December 26 - 31, 2006.  The previous record was held by The Lion King, with a gross of $1,402,984.02.

The Lion King moved in its entirety, including all 52-cast members and the entire 24-member orchestra, from the New Amsterdam Theatre on June 4, 2006 and began performances nine days later at its new home the Minskoff Theatre (Broadway at West 45th Street) on June 13, 2006. The move followed the completion of custom renovations to accommodate the Tony Award-winning production.

Since opening on Broadway in 1997, The Lion King has won over 70 major awards worldwide and has been seen by 34 million people.  In addition to New York City, the show can also be seen in (among other cities) London, Seoul, Amsterdam, Tokyo, and in two touring companies throughout the United States.

The Lion King's book was adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated film and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay.  Tony Award-winner Julie Taymore directs.  The score features Elton John and Tim Rice's music from the animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice, additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer.
