Tarragon Theatre to Present THE CAGED BIRD SINGS This June

Tarragon Theatre has announced THE CAGED BIRD SINGS, a Tarragon Theatre presentation of a Modern Times and Theatre ARTaud production. The production will run June 9–21, 2026, in the Extraspace, with an opening night set for June 12.

Created by Rouvan Silogix, Rafeh Mahmud, and Ahad Lakhani, THE CAGED BIRD SINGS is inspired by the Masnavi of Sufi poet Rumi. The play follows three prisoners — Rumi, Jin, and a mysterious figure named Sal — as they confront their pasts, personal demons, and questions surrounding freedom and confinement.

The production originally premiered at the Aga Khan Museum in 2024 and has since been reimagined for the Tarragon stage. According to the announcement, the work blends dark comedy with philosophical and spiritual themes rooted in Sufi mysticism.

In a statement, Payette said, “This revitalized presentation promises to transport audiences with magic, humour and invite a deeper exploration of the many realms that exist within us.”

The cast includes Mikaela Lily Davies as Rumi, Navtej Sandhu as Jin, and Rouvan Silogix as Sal.

Creative Team

The creative team includes director Rafeh Mahmud, set designer Waleed Ansari, Costume Designer Niloufar Ziaee, lighting designer Arun Srinivasan, sound designer John Gzowski, production manager Honey Hoseiny, and artistic producer Steph Crothers.

Performance Information

THE CAGED BIRD SINGS runs June 9–21, 2026, at Tarragon Theatre’s Extraspace venue.

Tickets range from $24–$72, with discounts available for students, seniors, groups, and arts workers.
