TM Sisters Curate I THINK IT'S IN MY HEAD Exhibition at Girls' Club, Opening 11/10

For its 2013-2014 exhibition, Girls' Club engaged Miami artist team TM Sisters (sisters Monica and Natasha Lopez de Victoria) to collaborate with the collection of contemporary art by women owned by Fort Lauderdale collectors Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz. After viewing works in the collection, the TM Sisters, who themselves create and perform works in a wide range of media, have selected pieces that exerted a powerful attraction, suggesting mysterious energies at play.

Paintings, drawings, prints, video and sculpture works have been chosen for their vivid metaphysics: figures in phases of transformation and metamorphosis, supernatural mysteries, telepathic communication, and explosions of psychic power. In addition to the works themselves, the gallery environment for I think it's in my head will use lighting and color to set an esoteric mood. Special programming aimed at expanding consciousness around art and expanded mental awareness will complement the exhibition.

The exhibition title I think it's in my head, derives from a neon sculpture by British artist Tracey Emin in the collection. Works in all media have been chosen and include internationally renowned artists Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Ana Mendieta, Beverly Semmes, Lorna Simpson and Catherine Opie. South Florida artists include Harumi Abe, Jen Stark, Samantha Salzinger and more.

Graphic and book designer Augusto Mendoza, of Book are Nice, will design the catalog and announcements for the exhibition. Texts for the catalog will be contributed by TM Sisters, by Claire Evans, lead singer of the band Yacht and by Girls' Club writer-in-residence Vanessa Garcia.

I think it's in my head opens Sunday, November 10, 2013, 5-8pm at a special twilight event.

Online Blog Series: 12 Women Lean Out of the Box and Out on a Limb: Responding to the contemporary feminist conversation, writer-in-residence Vanessa Garcia teams up with Girls' Club staff and interns to create a series of blog posts engaging 12 successful women in South Florida.

Theatrical Exquisite Corpse: A Night of Experiential Theatre

In collaboration with writer-in-residence Vanessa Garcia, Girls' Club presents an experimental night of theatre that draws from the surrealist tradition of the exquisite corpse. A multi-disciplinary feast for the eyes and head, Theatrical Exquisite Corpse includes dance, performance art, and more traditional forms of theatre inspired by "I think it's in my head." This is art your meant to live through, not just look at. Collaboratorsinclude writers Vanessa Garcia, Christina Frigo, multi-disciplinary artist Patricia Margarita Hernandez, choreographer Ivonne Batanero, and director Nicole Stodard, artistic director at Thinking Cap Theatre, a Fort Lauderdale based experimental theatre.

In conjunction with "I think it's in my head", Girls' Club will present a site -specific installation and interactive performance at PULSE Art Fair featuring the work of Miami based artist Kerry Phillips. New Moon Experience $10 suggested donation

In order to take advantage of the propitious effect of monthly new moons on creative endeavors, Girls' Club presents a series of workshops in yoga, meditation and creative alternative practices held on or near select new moons throughout the 2014 calendar year in conjunction with the exhibition "I think it's in my head". Look at How You're Looking at Me When I'm Telling You This, performance and workshop at Girls' Club

Broward-based artist and choreographer Jenny Larsson enlists six non-dancers who will perform investigations into pedestrian movement. Performance followed by a wine reception and Q&A with the choreographer. A 2-hour Saturday workshop extends the experience with discussion about what modern dance is, who can dance, who enjoys experimental dance and how audience interaction affects the experience. Participants will move, draw, sketch, talk and develop improvisational choreography with guest artist Jenny Larsson.

Third Avenue Annual ArtWalk

Each year, Girls' Club and the studios of the Third Avenue Art District in Fort Lauderdale open their private spaces of creation to the public.This year, Girls' Club will host a special cocktail reception and guided tour of "I think it's in my head" in collaboration with the Third Avenue Art District and Beaux Arts.

Artists in Action! at Girls' Club

Four local female artists from "I think it's in my head" will present talks and demonstrations on Fridayevenings in Spring 2014. Jiae Hwang, Adrienne Rose Gionta, Harumi Abe and Dinorah de Jesus Rodriguez will share their inspirations, their creative processes and career trajectories with the public, free of charge. This program, in its fifth year, always sparks lively discussion. At each event, Girls' Club will present a limited edition affordable artist multiple for sale.

About Girls' Club: Founded in 2006 by artist Francie Bishop Good and her husband David Horvitz, Girls' Club is a 501(c)3 foundation and alternative space, the only private collection in the world dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art by women. Cutting edge works in painting, drawing, photography and video are presented in curated, thematic exhibitions which also include works loaned from other collectors, and from galleries and artists. Artists represented in the Good/Horvitz collection are a diverse body of women - and some men - representing many ethnicities and nationalities.
