THE TEMPEST Will Come to The Grand Théâtre de Genève in September
Performances will run from September 16-26.
The Grand Théâtre de Genève will present Frank Martin’s opera “The Tempest” from Sept. 16 through Sept. 26 at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices in Geneva, Switzerland. Performances are scheduled for Sept. 16, 18, 22, 24 and 26 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Sept. 20 at 3 p.m.
Based on William Shakespeare’s play, “The Tempest” features a libretto by August Wilhelm von Schlegel and Johann Ludwig Tieck, with a French translation by Pauline Martin. The opera was first performed at the Vienna State Opera in 1956. The new production is a co-production with the Opéra national du Rhin and will be sung in French with French and English surtitles. The performance runs approximately three hours, including one intermission, and is recommended for audiences ages 12 and older.
Thierry Fischer will serve as musical director, with Netia Jones directing and designing the sets and costumes. Malcolm Rippeth is the lighting designer, Lightmap is responsible for video and Mark Biggins is chorus director. The production will feature the Grand Théâtre de Genève Chorus and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.
The cast will include Stéphane Degout as Prospero, Catherine Trottmann as Miranda, Julien Dran as Ferdinand, Nicolas Cavallier as Alonso, Edwin Crossley-Mercer as Sebastian, Léo Vermot-Desroches as Antonio, Christian Immler as Gonzalo, Glen Cunningham as Adrian, Alex Rosen as Caliban, François Rougier as Trinculo, Christophe Gay as Stephano, Georgiy Derbas-Richter as the Boatswain and Joseph Chosson as Ariel.
The opera follows Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, after a ship carrying the King of Naples and his companions is wrecked in a storm. The survivors arrive on the island where Prospero lives with his daughter, Miranda. Prospero uses his knowledge of magic to control the island and its inhabitants while pursuing revenge against those responsible for his downfall.
