Columbia Stages presents THE FRANKENSTEIN PROJECT, a modern re-examination of Mary Shelley's classic novel Frankenstein, newly conceived and directed for the stage by Matt Torney, running May 16th - 21st, 2009, at the Schapiro Theatre (615 W. 115th Street, located west of Broadway).

What makes us human?

The word ‘Frankenstein' conjures up several iconic pop culture images of a monster, an embodiment of science out of control, and of man punished for daring to challenge nature. As we enter the 'biotech' century, genetic engineering promises to transform the course of human evolution. Across the country scientists are splicing genes, cloning embryos, working towards creating synthetic life. This poses uncomfortable ethical questions about the nature of life and the boundaries of science.

Drawing from theatrical literary re-imaginings such as Gatz (Elevator Repair Service), based on The Great Gatsby, and Waves (Katie Mitchell), based on Virginia Woolf's The Waves, THE FRANKENSTEIN PROJECT explores Mary Shelley's iconic 1818 novel through the lens of cutting edge genetic-engineering and pop-cult horror and delves into the terror and ecstasy of the confrontation between creator and creation.

The production will feature an ensemble cast including: Malcolm Medera* as Victor Frankenstein, Justin Ness* as The Creature, and Alison Weisgall as Elizabeth.
