Theatre Communications Group (TCG) has announced the publication of A Master Builder by Henrik Ibsen, translated and adapted by Wallace Shawn. Shawn's version of the play was used by legendary director (and Shawn's frequent collaborator) André Gregory during 15 years of work on a theatrical production which, as of 2014, has not been produced in a theatre. Instead, it was made into a film by Jonathan Demme (Stop Making Sense, The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia), with a cast that includes Shawn, Gregory, Julie Hagerty, Lisa Joyce and Larry Pine.

Henrik Ibsen's Master Builder Solness is a modern classic about a successful, egomaniacal architect who has spent a lifetime bullying his wife, employees and mistresses, but who nonetheless wants to make peace with himself as his life approaches its final act. Shawn, a writer known for his own bleakly hilarious and provocative plays, translates and adapts Ibsen's Norwegian text into an utterly contemporary vision of the classic play. This book also includes an Afterword by Shawn.

Wallace Shawn is the author of Obie Award-winning plays Our Late Night, Aunt Dan and Lemon and The Fever. His other works include Marie and Bruce, The Designated Mourner, Grasses of a Thousand Colors and the screenplay for My Dinner with Andre, in which he also starred.

For over 50 years, Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for the American theatre, has existed to strengthen, nurture and promote the professional not-for-profit American theatre. TCG's constituency has grown from a handful of groundbreaking theatres to nearly 700 member theatres and affiliate organizations and more than 12,000 individuals nationwide. TCG offers its members networking and knowledge-building opportunities through conferences, events, research and communications; awards grants, approximately $2 million per year, to theatre companies and individual artists; advocates on the federal level; and serves as the U.S. Center of the International Theatre Institute, connecting its constituents to the global theatre community. TCG is North America's largest independent trade publisher of dramatic literature, with 13 Pulitzer Prizes for Best Play on the TCG booklist. It also publishes the award-winning AMERICAN THEATRE magazine and ARTSEARCH, the essential source for a career in the arts. In all of its endeavors, TCG seeks to increase the organizational efficiency of its member theatres, cultivate and celebrate the artistic talent and achievements of the field and promote a larger public understanding of, and appreciation for, the theatre. www.tcg.org
