Sweet & Nasty Burlesque Depart Public Assembly

By:

The producers of Sweet & Nasty Burlesque, Jonny Porkpie's Bad Ideas, and The Legs Malone Show announced today that they will no longer produce their monthly events at Public Assembly (formerly Galapagos) in Williamsburg. Legs and Nasty had their final shows on the first and third Mondays of last month, and Porkpie's swansong at 70 North 6th Street was in December.

"It has been wonderful to be part of the history of Monday Night Burlesque," said Nasty Canasta. "It was a night that, over a decade ago, helped create and define neo burlesque as an art form, and could in many ways be considered the genesis of the cavalcade of great shows which can now be found all over New York City."

Porkpie insists that the departure is amicable on all sides, and that it would be ridiculous to draw parallels between this situation and the recent late-night TV wars, especially since - unlike Conan - none of the shows (even the one with a gangly orange-haired host) received a multi-million-dollar severance package. Overall, Porkpie feels the move is a positive one, although he "did have a brief moment of doubt [about leaving] when I heard that they finally got rid of the rats."

But leaving a venue isn't enough to stop Sweet & Nasty, which has proudly dubbed itself "The Most Cancelled Show in Burlesque!" Like a phoenix rising rather quickly from the flames, the monthly show will continue uninterrupted in February with "Sweet & Nasty's Little Monsters" at Pink (at Blvd) on Monday, February 22 at 10 pm. Canasta confirmed plans to continue producing Sweet & Nasty shows regularly throughout 2010 and beyond, though has yet to decide whether she will remain at a single venue for the duration or seek a variety of different venues to suit the themes of her shows.

Jonny Porkpie's Bad Ideas and The Legs Malone Show will take a brief hiatus before seeking new spaces later in the year. In the meantime, Legs has announced she will travel to India to develop a line of elephant couture, and Porkpie says he will take time off to pen a follow-up to his hard-boiled burlesque murder mystery The Corpse Wore Pasties. He fervently denies that this sequel will be set in a run-down ex-mayonnaise factory in Williamsburg named "Communal Gathering".
