SummerStage Announces Upcoming Shows; Femi Kuti, Breakbeat Lou, Sister Nancy, The Originals, and More

City Parks Foundation's SummerStage is rounding out July and kicking off August with a diverse lineup of programming taking place all across New York City. For the most up-to-date scheduling and lineup for all SummerStage programming, visit www.SummerStage.org for all festival information.

On Sunday, July 29, Femi Kuti will bring the afrobeat to Central Park with his band The Positive Force. They will be joined by rising stars Congolese musician Jupiter and his band Okwess, and DJ Geko Jones. This free show will take place from 3 to 7 PM.Doors open at 2 PM.

Also on Sunday, July 29, Puerto Rican musician and salsero Charlie Aponte will perform a free show in Saint Mary's Park. After leading El Gran Combo for over four decades, Aponte left the group in 2014 and released his first-ever solo album the following year.

The Lox - a trifecta of street-inspired MCs comprised of Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch - will perform on Sunday, July 29 at Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island. They will perform alongside upcoming Brooklyn MC Young M.A. This free show includes special guest DJ Funk Flex and will be hosted by Torae. The show will take place from 7 to 10 PM. Doors are at 6 PM.

On Tuesday, July 31, A.I.M, led by the acclaimed contemporary choreographer Kyle Abraham, will present a special matinee dance program as part of SummerStage Studio series for youth. The program is designed to engage young people in the arts. Kyle Abraham's A.I.M Special Youth Matinee will take place from 11 to noon in Central Park. Doors open at 10:30 AM.

On Wednesday, August 1, join Kyle Abraham's Abraham.In.Motion (A.I.M) as they perform a selection of pieces including Strict Love, The Quiet Dance and Drive. This modern dance company creates an avocative interdisciplinary body of work through a sensual and provocative vocabulary with a strong emphasis on sound, human behavior, and all things visual. This free performance will take place from 8 to 10 PM in Central Park. Doors are at 7 PM. A pre-show panel "A Conversation with Kyle Abraham", hosted by dance critic Eva Yaa Asantewaa will take place. To RSPV, e-mail RSVP@CityParksFoundation.org.

Also on Wednesday, August 1, Puerto Rican-born salsa star, New York-bred Tito Nieves will perform in Crotona Park. He will be performing along with Bodoma and Garifuna Culture Band as they perform Indigenous Caribbean sounds. This free show will take place from 6 to 9 PM. A pre-show Garifuna Drums, Dance & Culture Workshop will take place, at 6 PM, along with a performance from the South Bronx Kids.

Latin trap stars of the emerging scene will be performing on Thursday, August 2, in Crotona Park. This lineup includes Messiah, the breakout Dominican artist from New York, as well as Lito Kirino, Brray, Joyce Santana, El Sosa, and Nelly Nelz. This freeshow will be hosted by AJ El Kallejero and will take place from 7 to 9 PM.

On Friday, August 3, pioneering producer and beatmaker BreakBeat Lou will perform in Crotona Park. He will be taking the stage with hip-hop mainstays Special Ed, Nice and Smooth and Lord Finesse. This free show will take place from 6 to 9 PM. A pre show hip-hop dance workshop with Fabel and a performance from the South Bronx Kids will take place at 6 PM.

On Saturday, August 4, The Originals will perform in Central Park. The crew includes Stretch Armstrong of "Stretch and Bobbito" radio show, hip-hop producer Clark Kent, APT legend Rich Medina, and New York DJs D-Nice and Tony Touch. This free show will take place from 6 to 10 PM. Doors open at 5 PM.

Also on Saturday, August 4, Jamaican trailblazer and queen of dancehall Sister Nancy will perform in Crotona Park. She'll perform along with Bronx-born reggae fusion rapper Shinehead and the eclectic sounds of DJ Misbehavior. This free show will take place from 4 to 7 PM. A pre-show Voices of A People's History Workshop with mums aka Craig Grant, as well as a performance of The Big Good Wolf from the CityParks PuppetMobile will take place at 4 PM.
