Student Blog: Takeaways From My First Semester At College Image

Before we head into a new semester, I figured I'd tell you some of what I learned from my first semester at college that may help you next semester.

One thing I learned from experience, and from talking to my fellow freshman friends, is that it's normal to feel overwhelmed. Just know that this overwhelming feeling is temporary and gets better with time. It's no secret that going to college is scary. But, once you get used to the potential new location and schedule, it isn't so bad.

Entering college for the first time, my parents told me that every first-year is in the same situation as me, so I shouldn't be afraid to get out of my comfort zone. This advice helped me immensely, especially during my first few weeks at college. Even though you may feel alone at first, know that just about everyone else feels the same way you do, so don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with someone you don't know.

I've also learned that, even though it may not seem like it, help is available all around you. Whether you need help from your professors, academic advisor, or friends, I guarantee that there are many resources available to help you with whatever problem you have.

Although it's hard, I've learned to consider the importance of mental health. As I've mentioned before, going to college is scary. It's also stressful. Try to take as much stress off yourself as you can by taking care of your mental health. And, although you should have fun adventures with your new friends, you don't always have to say yes to potential adventures if you're not truly up for it.

The biggest lesson I have learned from my first semester at college is that college is what you make of it. If you're going to college just to get a degree, spend all your time studying. If you want to get a degree plus some friends and lifelong memories, find a good work-life balance that works for you.
