Stomp Celebrates 12th Anniversary Off-Bway, Feb. 27

By: Feb. 25, 2006

Stomp, the percussion and movement show that has become a hit around the world, will celebrate its 12th anniversary at New York's Orpheum Theatre on February 27. It recently played its 5000th performance there.

Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, Stomp is currently playing in New York, London's West End, and on North American and European tours. Next week, audiences can see Stomp in New York; London; and College Station, Texas. The European tour will resume in Dusseldorf, Germany in early March. Stomp recently played Asia, including Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

The show began previews in New York on February 18, 1994 and opened on February 27 of that year. Since then, Stomp has toured the world and performed in places and on television shows ranging from Mister Roger's Neighborhood to The Acropolis in Athens to The Academy Awards in Hollywood.

"A unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, Stomp has created its own inimitable, contemporary form of rhythmic expression: both household and industrial objects find new life as musical instruments in the hands of an idiosyncratic band of body percussionists. It is a journey through sound, a celebration of the everyday, and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum," state press notes.

Stomp is the winner of an Olivier Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award for Unique Theatrical Experience, and an Obie Award.
