Shubert Theater Evacuated Friday Afternoon

By: Dec. 29, 2006

1010 WINS and other New York City news sources reported that Broadway's Shubert Theater was evacuated Friday afternoon. No one was taken ill or hospitalized as a result.

The theatre, which is home to Monty Python's Spamalot had a matinee performance (specially added for the holiday week) going on at the time of the incident. The audience was let back into the theatre shortly after the evacuation and the evening performance went on as planned.

According to an online report, an audience member had thrown a cigarette butt into a vent during intermission and the circulation of smoke prompted the evacuation. Fire trucks arrived on the scene, the theater was shortly pronounced safe and then the audience let back in for the remainder of the performance.
