Scandinavian American Theater Company to Stage Reading of THE SUMMER WITHOUT MEN

SATC presents, in partnership with The Royal Norwegian Consulate General, New York, The Consulate General of Denmark, New York and The American-Scandinavian Foundation, Peter Langdal's New York Directorial Debut: THE SUMMER WITHOUT MEN by Siri Hustvedt (US), adapted for the stage by Karen-Maria Bille and Peter Langdal (Denmark), translated from the Danish by David Adler.

The play is based on Siri Hustvedt's bestselling novel and was adapted for the stage by Karen-Maria Bille and Peter Langdal (translated from the Danish by David Adler). Peter Langdal, one of Scandinavia's leading theater directors, will direct this reading as his New York debut.

The Summer without Men tells the universal story of a woman's search for her lost identity after her husband has left her. It paints a strong picture of three generations of women all struggling with loneliness, loss and sexuality.

ABOUT THE WRITER

Siri Hustvedt has a PhD in English literature from Columbia University and is the internationally acclaimed author of five novels, The Blindfold, The Enchantment of Lily Dahl, What I Loved, The Summer Without Men and The Blaz-ing World; as well as three collections of essays, A Plea for Eros, Mysteries of the Rectangle: Essays on Painting, and Living, Thinking, Looking; as well as the nonfiction work: The Shaking Woman or A History of My Nerves. What I Loved and The Summer Without Men were international bestsellers. Her work has been shortlisted for numerous awards, including the Femina Etranger in France, and she is the recipient of the 2012 International Gabarron Prize for Thought and Humanities. She lives in Brooklyn.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHTS

Peter Langdal (also director) is one of the leading stage directors in Scandinavia. Since his professional debut in 1983 his playful and innovative work has been much in demand at the large theater and opera houses in the Nordic countries (i.e. The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, The National Theatre in Oslo, The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen). From 1992 - 2015 Langdal was artistic director of the renowned Betty Nansen Theatre in Copenhagen that achieved international fame during his leadership.

Karen-Maria Bille has worked at a number of Danish and Swedish theaters and is one of the most experienced dramaturgs in Scandinavia. From 2000-2008 Bille was head of the literary department of The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. Over the past almost 30 years she has contributed with adaptations, concepts and translations (from German, English, Swedish and Norwegian) to countless productions.
