Qurrat Ann Kadwani's THEY CALL ME Q! Selected for FringeNYC Encore Series Tonight

After sold out shows in FringeNYC 2013, Best Actress and Best Play Winner Qurrat Ann Kadwani is invited to perform her one woman play, "They Call Me Q!" at FringeNYC Encore: Solo in the City.

Performances are at Baruch Performing Arts Center, Engelman Recital Hall (55 Lexington Ave at 25th St, NYC) tonight, Sept 13 at 7pm followed by a reception and Saturday, Sept 14 at 1pm.

Proclaimed "A Theatrical Force" by the Orlando Weekly for her uncanny embodiment of 13(!) characters, award-winning actressQurrat Ann Kadwani searches for identity in "They Call Me Q!" an autobiographical one-woman show. This emotionally affecting tour-de-force is fueled by her "remarkable ear for vocal mimicry." A coming of age, tale that the Montreal Gazette says is "witty, polished, inspiring,""They Call Me Q!" entertains with tremendous humor and compelling emotion with BeyondCriticism.com stating it is "a jazzy gem, in the ranks of John Leguizamo, Spalding Gray, Camryn Manheim." In the course of the one hour play, Ms.Kadwani portrays characters based on her traditional Indian parents, Caucasian teachers, Puerto Rican classmates, African-American friends and various Indian women. Through the character of Q, Ms. Kadwani gives voice to all the universal struggles for identity and self-understanding that are experienced by immigrants of all nationalities.

Ms. Kadwani won the Best Actress award for her one woman show, "They Call Me Q!", at Variations Theatre Group's 2012 Harvest Theatre Festival which was held at the Chain Theatre, NYC. Ms.Kadwani won the Best Play award for her one woman show, "They Call Me Q!", at the Maui Fringe Festival 2013 which was held at Maui OnStage, in Maui, Hawaii.

"They Call Me Q!" tells the story of Qurrat Ann Kadwani, an Indian-American woman on the quest for identity. " Growing up in the Bronx, I had experiences with many diverse people. I have written characters based on real people who inspired me; who stayed with me in my journey to understand who I am and who have helped me to become the person I am today," Ms.Kadwani says. "As an ethnic female who immigrated to America with my family, I have come across many challenges in developing and understanding my identity. I wanted to address the immigrant experience of the person who has grown up in America, who is caught in the middle of the American and the home culture, and who tries so hard to make sure that both cultures have a voice. I wanted to address the universal question: What happens when you don't fit in either culture?"

"They Call Me Q!" debuted at the 2012 Chicago Fringe Festival. Future performances include colleges in New York, Kentucky, Tennessee, Chicago and Wisconsin.

Qurrat Ann Kadwani is an actress, playwright, host, emcee, and philanthropist. She has hosted for "Namaste America" (www.namastetv.com). She is the founding Artistic Director of eyeBLINK, a multicultural arts organization (www.eyeblink.org). She is a graduate of The Bronx High School of Science and a theater graduate of SUNY Geneseo as a double scholarship recipient for her directing and acting contributions. She has appeared on TV, Film and Stage as well as emceed events for several non-profit organizations. She also coordinates an annual philanthropic project "A Slice of Hope" (www.asliceofhope.org). Ms. Kadwani raised funds for charity when she ran the 2007 Marine Corps Marathon (26.2 miles) in Washington DC and the 2009 ING NYC Marathon (26.2 miles). She is a proud member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA.
