Tony nominated playwright Simon Gray died today, August 7th, 2008 in his London home from lung cancer. He was 71 years old.

The British playwright wrote over thirty plays, most notably Butley and Otherwise Engaged, both of which earned him Tony nominations. Butley was revived on Broadway in 2006 starring Nathan Lane. He collaborated with playwright and director Harold Pinter seven times. He was also frequently known for casting actor Alan Bates

In addition to theatre, Gray wrote dozens of television scripts and screenplays including the series "After Pilkington". He also wrote the novels "Simple People" and "Breaking Hearts."

He is survived by his wife, Victoria.
