Photos: 'What We Tell Ourselves' Holds Developmental Presentation In New York City
Jackson Paul Walker directed the reading, giving the creative team its first chance to hear the full script performed.
A private developmental presentation of Cavan Hendron's new play What We Tell Ourselves was held Sunday, August 30 at Open Jar Studios in New York City.
Inspired by the aftermath of an infamous American true-crime case, What We Tell Ourselves follows the daughters of two women at the center of a decades-old tragedy who reunite 25 years later when they are approached about participating in a new documentary. What begins as a conversation about whether to revisit the past becomes an examination of memory, inheritance, and the stories we construct to live with what came before us.
The presentation marked the latest stage in the play's development and was met with an enthusiastic response from those in attendance. The invited audience included acclaimed actors Becky Ann Baker and Dylan Baker, along with members of the New York theatre community.
Written by Cavan Hendron and directed by Jackson Paul Walker, the presentation offered the creative team an opportunity to hear the full piece in front of an audience for the first time and continue exploring the play's theatrical language and central questions as development moves forward.
