Dame Judi Dench is once again treading the boards as the matriarch of
the dotty Bliss family in a London revival of Noel Coward's Hay Fever that began previews at the Haymarket Theatre on April 6th and opened on April 19th.
Directed
by Olivier Award-winner Sir Peter Hall, the revival also features
Peter Bowles as John Standing, the novelist husband of Dench's
character Judith Bliss, a flamboyant actress. Written in 1924, the
farce is set on a country estate as each member of the unconventional
Bliss family invites a guest to spend the weekend. Naturally, the
guests are shocked, appalled and somewhat amused at the family's
behavior.Dench has
countless stage, theatre and television appearances to her credit. She
won a Tony Award for her work in Amy's View, and holds six Olivier Awards--for Pack of Lies, Antony and Cleopatra, A Little Night Music, Absolute Hell, Filumena, and Amy's View as well as special Olivier for her contributions to the British Theatre. An Academy Award-winner for Shakespeare in Love, she most recently appeared on London stages in the RSC's All's Well That Ends Well. She has previously been seen at the Haymarket in Breath of Life (opposite Dame Maggie Smith) and The Royal Family.Photos by Karim Merie/Camera Press/Retna Ltd.
