Photo Flash: In Rehearsal with Throughline Theatre's UBU ROI

By:

The scourge of Ubuism is spreading! Papa Ubu is one of King Wenceslas of Poland's trusted vassals - until he leads a revolt and overthrows the government, declaring himself the new king. He then proceeds to slaughter the country's nobility in order to steal their wealth and consolidate his power, while heavily taxing the rest of the population. A few refugees band together with foreign powers to stop the reign of Ubu, but will their alliance succeed?

Alfred Jarry wrote the play in the late 1900s as a Symbolist parody informed by several works of Shakespeare, including Macbeth, Hamlet, and The Winter's Tale . The original production was followed immediately by a riot, and Jarry's play was banned from further productions on the Paris stage, but is now acknowledged by some to have given birth to the modernist movement. Shannon Knapp directs Throughline's production of the play, adapted by Connor Shioshita Pickett and Jordan Matthew Walsh, which will feature Brett Sullivan Santry, Vanessa St. Clair, John Feightner, Sarah Deasy, Arjun Kumar, Elena Falgione, Marsha Mayhak, Gwen Vickinovac, Chris Collier, Lawrence Karl, and Kathleen Regan.

Ubu Roi opens Friday, June 22 and runs through Saturday, June 30. Thursday and Friday performances start at 8:00 p.m., Saturday performances at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 general admission or $15.00 for students, artists, and seniors. On opening night, for an additional $10, entry to the Opening Night Party can be purchased. Tickets are available at the door or online at throughline.showclix.com. The 2:00 p.m. performance on Sunday, June 24 is pay-what- you-wish, and tickets for this performance can be purchased online or at the door (but are considered donations) and are first come, first served.
