Photo Flash: DIASPORA Opens at the Gym At Judson
Diaspora opened this past Friday at the Gym at Judson. The show runs until December 23.
Diaspora tells the story of a group of college age Jewish-Americans visiting Israel through the Birthright program. Olivia wants to reconnect with her heritage and childhood friends, Rachel and Hannah. Hannah is still reeling from a break up with her first real boyfriend and is looking for a distraction. Rachel questions the politics of the trip and her surroundings, and has a plan that involves seeing the parts of the country that Birthright means to hide. While their storyline seems like "Girls' Trip" or "American Pie" goes on Birthright, the ancient narrative of Achinoam and Masada starts to become more than just a talking point for the tour guide. Her people have been under siege by the Roman army and mass suicide seems like the only option for the refugees to preserve their liberty as Jews.
Written by Nathaniel Shapiro. Directed by Saheem Ali. Diaspora features scenic design by Maruti Evans, lighting design by Miles Polaski, video design by Caite Hevner, and costume design by Oana Botez. Casting by Kate Lumpkin. Starring Serena Berman, Connie Castanzo, Ava Eisenson, Quinn Franzen, Tom McVey, Maggie Metnick, Joe Tapper, and RJ Vaillancourt.
