SHREK THE MUSICAL star and 2009 Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James helped New Yorkers kick off a massive week-long volunteer effort in honor of Mandela Day, Mr. Mandela's 91st birthday celebration, with a reading of "Nelson Mandela's Favorite African Folktales" for over 100 children ages 5-9 from the Harlem School of the Arts at Washington Square Park on Monday, July 13th.
Mandela Day is designed as a call around the world for people to honor Nelson Mandela's inspiration and values and observe the date annually, not as a holiday, but as a day to opt in. From July 13 - 17, the week leading up to Mr. Mandela's birthday, New Yorkers will be encouraged to donate 67 minutes of their time to help better their community.Nelson Mandela spent 67 years of his life serving humanitarian causes since he actively became involved in campaigning for the rights of every South African and now Mr. Mandela's charitable organizations 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation are calling on people around the world to give 67 minutes of their time to help others with the idea that each individual has the ability to make the world a better place. The week of volunteer activities will culminate with the star-studded Mandela Day concert celebration at Radio City Music Hall on July 18, featuring performances by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, Will.i.am, Josh Groban and many others.
