On February 13th, Hairspray bid a fond farewell to Diana DeGarmo ("American Idol") and welcomed film star Alexa Vega (Spy Kids, Sleepover), who succeeded DeGarmo as Penny Pingleton. The celebration took place at the Palm West Restaurant (250 W. 50th St.).The Tony Award-winning Hairspray, running at the Neil Simon Theatre, is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters. It features a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, and a score by five-time Academy Award nominee Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.Hairspray currently stars Shannon Durig, Ashley Parker Angel, Paul Vogt, Jere Burns, Tevin Campbell, Darlene Love, Brynn O'Malley, Isabel Keating and Susan Mosher.
