Pen Parentis Takes On THE BODY

When a poet, nonfiction writer, or novelist is known for edgy subject matter and graphic depictions of the body, how does parenthood affect their writing? The hot topic of THE BODY will be addressed by notable authors Caroline Hagood, Kathryn Curto, and David Ebenbach at the monthly Pen Parentis Literary Salon in Lower Manhattan in March. After a short mingling and networking period, authors will read from their latest work and participate in moderated roundtable led by veteran salonnières, M. M. De Voe and Christina Chiu, on Tuesday March 10th at 7pm. The general public is welcome to add their voices to the discussion, though children should be left at home-the conversation-rich event is for 21 and over.

Pen Parentis has recently won a Creative Engagement grant from New York City to support these monthly salons.

Pen Parentis Salons are held in LMHQ's main event space on the 20th floor of 150 Broadway, three blocks south of Fulton Street. Refreshments are complimentary with $10 admission, waived for members of Pen Parentis, students (21+), and those in need. The readings will be Livecast on Facebook.com/penparentis, but the discussion will happen in-room only.

Caroline Hagood is the author of two books of poetry including Making Maxine's Baby, a small press bestseller, and one collection of essays, Ways of Looking at a Woman, also a small press bestseller and a Kirkus-recommended book. She lives in Brooklyn with her children.

Kathy Curto teaches at The Writing Institute and Montclair State University. She is the author of Not for Nothing-Glimpses into a Jersey Girlhood. Her work has been featured several times on NPR, and in The New York Times, Barrelhouse, and many others. She has been the recipient of the Kathryn Gurfein Writing Fellowship, the Montclair State University Engaged Teaching Fellowship and also serves on the faculty of the Joe Papaleo Writers' Workshop in Cetara, Italy. She has four children.

Returning to Pen Parentis, David Ebenbach is the author of seven books of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction, including the recent poetry collection Some Unimaginable Animal and the recent novel Miss Portland. His books have won such awards as the Drue Heinz Literature Prize, the Juniper Prize, the Patricia Bibby Award, the Orison Fiction Prize, and others. He has been the recipient of fellowships at the MacDowell Colony and the Virginia Center of the Creative Arts, and an Individual Excellence Award granted by the Ohio Arts Council. He now lives with his family in Washington, DC, where he teaches creative writing and literature at Georgetown University.
