PS Classics Unveils Four Spring Releases Including A Catered Affair and Kerry Butler's 'Faith, Trust & Pixie Dust'

By: May. 10, 2008

PS Classics, the label dedicated to the heritage of Broadway and American popular song, has begun websales for four of its spring releases: original cast recordings of A Catered Affair and ADDING MACHINE, and solo discs by Kerry Butler and Capathia Jenkins.  None of these albums are available yet in stores (A Catered Affair and ADDING MACHINE hit stores on May 27 and June 3, respectively), but PS Classics has begun accepting orders and shipping from its website, www.psclassics.com.

A Catered Affair, the new Broadway musical with a book by Harvey Fierstein and score by John Bucchino, poses the question that inevitably faces every mother and daughter: whose wedding is it anyway?  It's 1953, and family ties are strained when a Bronx mother struggles to give her only daughter the elaborate wedding she herself never had.  Starring Faith Prince, Tom Wopat and Fierstein himself, this original Broadway cast recording reveals a tender, rich and deeply moving score by the much-honored Bucchino, here making his Broadway debut.

ADDING MACHINE inspired some of the most rhapsodic reviews of the 2007-2008 theatre season.  Featuring a score by Joshua Schmidt and libretto by Jason Loewith and Mr. Schmidt, ADDING MACHINE is a darkly comic yet heartbreakingly beautiful adaptation of Elmer Rice's incendiary 1923 play.  In relating the story of Mr. Zero, who after 25 years of service to his company is replaced by a mechanical adding machine, the astonishing score gives passionate and memorable voice to this stylish, stylized production, which follows Zero's journey all the way to the afterlife.

FAITH, TRUST & PIXIE DUST finds golden-voiced Kerry Butler (currently doing double-duty as the star of Broadway's smash hit XANADU and as Lindsay Price's backstabbing assistant Reese on the NBC series "Lipstick Jungle") taking on seventy years of unforgettable Disney material – from wartime standards ("When You Wish Upon a Star," "Baby Mine") to newer pop songs (Randy Newman's "When She Loved Me," Jonatha Brooke's "I'll Try") to rarities (Alan Menken's "This Only Happens in the Movies," receiving its premiere recording here).

ONE OUNCE OF TRUTH combines the sultry and soaring voice of Capathia Jenkins with the inspired melodies of composer Louis Rosen that mix jazz, blues, soul, and American roots music. Jenkins' powerful and sensitive performances blend with Rosen's music – alternately delicate and exultant – in exploring those most universal of human experiences: friendship, lust, love and loss.  It's a lush and memorable collection based on the vivid words of Nikki Giovanni, the Grammy-nominated poet recently chosen as one of Oprah Winfrey's "Living Legends."

Founded in 2000 by Tommy Krasker & Philip Chaffin, and a four-time Grammy nominee (for its cast recordings of Nine: The Musical, Assassins, Grey Gardens, and Company), PS CLASSICS has helped preserve the heritage of American popular song through its critically acclaimed cast recordings (including the current Xanadu and Sunday in the Park With George); solo albums by such artists as Maureen McGovern, Victoria Clark and Jessica Molaskey; and recordings drawn from rare sound archives, including Sondheim Sings.  Visit www.psclassics.com.
