North/South Consonance, Inc. to Present Max Lifchitz: Self Portrait, 6/15

North/South Consonance, Inc. continues its 30th consecutive season of free admission concerts with a special program featuring the music of Max Lifchitz, the Mexican-born composer celebrating 30 years at the helm of this organization.

The event will be held this coming Tuesday, June 15 at 8 PM at the auditorium of Christ & St. Stephen's Church (120 West 69th St) in Manhattan. Admission is free.

Max Lifchitz has been a dynamic figure in America's musical life for a number of seasons. Born in México City in 1948, he has resided in the US since 1966. A graduate of The Juilliard School and Harvard University, he is active as composer, performer, educator and producer. His creative endeavors have been made possible through grants and fellowships from the ASCAP, Ford and Guggenheim Foundations; Meet the Composer, Inc.; the New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artists Program; and the National Endowment for the Arts. His appearances throughout Latin America have been underwritten by the Fund US Artists at International Festivals. He was recently honored with the Zethus Award in recognition of his activities on behalf of contemporary composers. "A young composer of brilliant imagination and a stunning ultra-sensitive pianist" is how the San Francisco Chronicle described him. The New York Times referred to him as an "interesting and able musician" and praised him for his "clean, measured and sensitive performances." The American Record Guide commented: "Mr. Lifchitz is as good on the podium as he is behind the keyboard."

The program will feature compositions written during the last four decades. It will include performances of Consorte (for viola & viola d'amore -written in 1970); Three Songs for Soprano & Trumpet (written in 1984); Of Bondage and Freedom (for soprano, violin and piano - written in 1991); Mosaico Latinoamericano (for flute and piano -written in 1991); Vignettes for woodwind quintet (written in 2005); as well as Yellow Ribbons No. 22 (for viola and piano - written in 1984); Yellow Ribbons No. 39 (for solo flute -written in 2005); and Yellow Ribbons No. 43 (for solo clarinet -written in 2007).

In addition to Mr. Lifchitz appearing as pianist, the distinguished performers will include sopranos Lielle Berman & Deborah Horne; flutists Jennifer Grim & Laura Falzon; clarinetists Marianne Gythfeldt; violinist Claudia Schaer; violists Edmundo Ramirez & Christiana Liberis; trumpeter Chris Bubolz; and The Zephyros Winds.
