Ninjaz Of Drama Present Oscar Wilde Comedy THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

Breaking from their tradition of producing Shakespeare, the Ninjas of Drama "Go Wilde" with their "1960's London Mod" take on the ever-popular Oscar Wilde comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, running November 30-December 16 at The Phoenix Theatre, 414 Mason Street, Suite 601. In San Francisco 94102. The Phoenix Theatre is Located in the historic Theatre District next to Union Square and close to the Powell St BART Station and SF Muni.

Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, subtitled "A Trivial Comedy for Serious People," was first performed on February 1895 in London. It is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. By setting the play in 1960's Mod London, the Ninjaz have found another era perfect for thumbing the nose at social convention.

Reviewers in Wild's time praised the play's humor and the culmination of his artistic career, while others were cautious about its lack of social messages. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most enduringly popular play.
