Live Artery 2017, New York Live Arts' dynamic showcase of new and recent works by Live Arts residency and commissioned artists, opens January 6 and runs through January 9, 2017. Presented during the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference, Live Artery 2017 will feature excerpts of recently premiered works and work-in-progress presentations by artists commissioned by Live Arts, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, and guests.

Blackoutput, led by André Zachery and LaMont Hamilton, brings together a slew of young POC artists whose works are responding to our socio-political climate with artistic ingenuity and pushing the limits of form and presentation, while reconsidering the role of the spectator. Created specially for Live Artery, the showcase features works by Renegade Performance Group/André M. Zachery + LaMont Hamilton, Audrey Hailes, Samara Gaev and yon Tande.

Sozo Artists, Inc. showcases a dynamic roster of artists in TED-style presentations and performances. From apps to site-specific works to hybrid operas, Sozo artists defy convention and create engaging, perspective-changing live arts experiences. Created by director and designer Carlos Soto, Everything, Alright follows the dissolution of a group faced with the intrusion of a visitor. The piece concerns itself with those mechanisms that define community by identifying the other. Informed by the threatening foreignness of post-war science fiction, the piece approaches a poetics of the moving body and its opposition to language while broaching the unspeakable: absence, solitude, the monstrous, anger, horror and pleasure. Viewed from shifting angles, once-affectionate gestures become aggressive, simultaneously reconstructing a traumatic event and staging a fantasy.Marjani Forte-SAUNDERS - MEMOIRS OF A .... Memoirs of a.... Unicorn [Unicorn] is inspired by the life of Forte-Saunders' father who fled the South in the Great Migration. Provocative and raw, it is a migration story, portraying broken lineage and halved families. This solo evening-length dance work is performed by Forte-Saunders in an open raw space populated by structures designed by David Reynoso and built by her father Rick Forté, a contractor. Paloma McGregor is a Caribbean choreographer and writer who creates embodied performance work that explores residue, ritual and magic. Her new work is rooted in the vanishing fishing tradition and her 90-year-old father. Give It To You Stage culminates the art-pop duo Yackez's underground performances into a dance musical. Featuring their queer pro-wrestling dance ensemble and a special appearance by seniors from Larissa's citywide dance-fitness classes, the piece becomes a multi-generational interdisciplinary spectacle. Briggs and his battle with drugs, his excessive life style and the sex trade in the club culture of the 1990s, and the brand new work-in-progress Analogy/Ambros: The Emigrant inspired by W.G. Stories by Hand is a solo project searching for personal identity in a media overloaded world. Stories, which are personal, mythical and social, are narrated through the continuous placement and displacement of gestures affected by memory. The piece takes the hand gestures of Bharatanatyam (classical Indian dance) as the basis for a storytelling dance-theater interweaving east and west, past and present, the mythic and the everyday. The performance, having a more populist direction, will strip away traditional trappings of the dance form to create an intimate and much less ceremonial experience. Hailed by the New York Times as "a mind capable of transforming a familiar space into something eerie and unrecognizable," Kotze presents It Happened It Had Happened It Is Happening It Will Happen. In this piece, Kotze and her two collaborating dancers confront the seductiveness of classifying, ordering and structuring, while attempting to hold onto the character of the unnamable, vulnerable and imaginable. Kotze is the recipient of the 2013 New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award for Outstanding Emerging Choreographer, nominated after the Danspace Project premiere of It Happened.... Walter Dundervill's new dance begins where his previous work Arena left off - with a group of mysterious individuals gathered in the skybox of a stadium. Using ancient Roman frescoes, a 17th century mathematical theory and a late mannerist painting as departure points, SKYBOX examines how we construct highly ordered views of nature and the supernatural to express concepts of futurity and the infinite. Bessie Award winner and New York Live Arts' 2015-17 Randjelovic/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist Okwui Okpokwasili will present excerpts of Poor People's TV Room created as part of her two-year residency at Live Arts. (The show will have its New York City premiere at Live Arts April 19-22, 26-29, 2017.) The piece is informed by two historic incidents in Nigeria: The Women's War of 1929, a resistance movement against British colonial powers, and the Boko Haram kidnappings of more than 300 girls that launched the Bring Back Our Girls movement. Created in collaboration with director/visual designer Peter Born, the piece will be performed by a multi-generational ensemble, featuring movement, song and text influenced by dystopian folklore, speculative fiction, Igbo cosmology and the futures and commodities markets. Obie and Lucille Lortel Award winner and Drama Desk and Emmy Award nominated choreographer Sonya Tayeh presents excerpts from her newest work, you'll still call me by name, an emotionally charged dance-symphony that explores a mystifying, complex and jagged relationship between a mother and daughter. The show, performed by a company of ten dancers and six musicians, features an original score composed by The Bengsons, whose music has been called exhilarating, raw, spine-tingling and radiantly emotive (The Guardian, Time Out New York). Tayeh's riveting new work exposes the cellular desire for familial acceptance intimately investigating and dissecting the heartbreaking chasm that forms when it is lost and the endurance it takes to transcend the space in between. Clear & Sweet is a new multi-disciplinary performance by zoe | juniper, the Seattle-based dance and visual art team, co-founded by choreographer Zoe Scofield and visual artist Juniper Shuey. The piece incorporates dance, vocals and visuals and is inspired by Southern Baptist Sacred Harp Singing, a form of spiritual a cappella choral singing founded in Southern Baptist churches. zoe | juniper will integrate sacred harp singers into audiences creating an immersive sonic, physical and visual experience.
