New Victory Theater Announces 10th Anniversary Season

The New Victory Theater is turning 10! On December 11, 1995, NYC's premier theater for kids and families forever changed the 42nd street landscape when it became the FIRST historic theater to reopen its doors. Declared "a jewel on a street of gems" by The New York Times, The New Victory Theater garnered an international reputation for "consistently raising dance, theater and performance specifically for family audiences to new levels" (New York Magazine). To date, it has showcased 129 productions (three of which have transferred to Broadway!) by 97 national and international companies. Now for its 10th Anniversary Season, The New Victory proudly presents:
ABOUT THE NEW VICTORY THEATER
With a commitment to developing theater audiences of the future, The New Victory presents a range of professional productions at affordable ticket prices (tickets range from $10 - $30 and Member tickets are only $7 - $21). In addition, it also offers daytime school performances ($2 per student), family workshops and jobs to high school and college students. Interactive Lower Lobby Activities are available to families before and after particular shows (The Mouse Queen, Baron Rabinovitsj, Comedy 4 Kids), and The New Victory provides Talk Backs with the artists after select performances. The New Victory kicks off its 10th Anniversary Season with the highly anticipated New York City debut of the Black Grace dance company. This all-male, seven-member powerhouse, of predominantly Pacific Island and Maori descent, recently thrilled dance critics and audiences alike at the distinguished Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Fusing contemporary styles and traditional island dances, the engaging ensemble soars, tumbles and stomps through fierce choreography with incomparable strength. Modern melodies blend with native folk music as the dancers incorporate spoken word, song and even body percussion into this dance tour de force. In this charming toe-tapping tale, two mismatched mammals find themselves thrown together on a journey to a jungle no animal would dare inhabit…the "concrete jungle." Tilly, a tiny mouse, escapes the jaws of Leonard, the king of all beasts, by showing him a gold coin bearing the face of a ruler more powerful than he. Leonard decides he must defend his throne and confront this imposter by heading to the city with Tilly in tow. Now, in collaboration with the world-class puppet artists of the Shaanxi Folk Art Theatre, the magic of "the wizard of visual storytelling" (Star Tribune) reappears in an all new triumphant triptych that spans across China's history: During the Tang dynasty, an emperor is forced to choose between his people and his one true love; amidst the horrors of World War II, a young boy struggles to survive during the Japanese occupation; and inside a modern day Chinese grand hotel, rap stars, businessmen and tourists discover a mysterious, supernatural connection between themselves and the first two stories. In The Frog Bride, David portrays all of the story's characters filling the Theater with his larger than life personae and his signature storytelling style. Backed on stage by two award-winning musicians playing everything from jazz to classical, David retells the tale of a prince who is forced to marry a frog when his arrow lands in her pond. When the prince discovers his beloved is actually a princess cursed by an evil witch, he must race against the clock to break the spell and save the girl (er, frog) before losing her forever.
