NY Times Covers Who's in the Red and Black

By: Oct. 26, 2010

An article by Patrick Healy for the NY Times points out that several new shows this Broadway season, including Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and La Bete, are struggling to fill their houses after receiving mixed reviews for their productions.

As discussed by Healy, "Bloody Bloody had a relatively low gross last week for a musical - $388,676 - in its first week since opening on Oct. 13. That dollar amount represented 42 percent of the show's maximum possible gross. In general, musicals need to make 55 percent to 60 percent of their maximum possible gross to break even."

Healy continues, "La Bête, starring the eminent British actors Mark Rylance and Joanna Lumley and a familiar face from American television, David Hyde Pierce." href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/h/david_hyde_pierce/index.html?inline=nyt-per">David Hyde Pierce (Niles on "Frasier"), grossed $344,685 for its first full week since opening on Oct. 14. While the gross was about 12 percent higher than the previous week, it still represented only 37 percent of the maximum possible gross. Most plays need to earn 40 percent to 45 percent of their maximum possible gross to cover weekly running costs."
