After THE WIZ LIVE!, NBC can't stay away from Broadway, and we can't thank them enough! Variety reports that Tony nominees Claudia Shear (TUCK EVERLASTING, DIRTY BLONDE) and songwriting team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (DEAR EVAN HANSON, SMASH) are developing VOICE OF THE CITY, a one-hour musical drama, for the network.

The show, "set in 1891 during the rise of New York City," includes "original musical elements" and "is said to be a sweeping story told from the point of view of a romantic showman, Patrick and his love, Lucy, as they struggle to create a life in a new land in the only business they know."

Playwright and actress Claudia Shear was nominated for TONY AWARDS for Best Play and Best Actress for Broadway's DIRTY BLONDE in 2000. She also starred in 2002's THE SMELL OF THE KILL and wrote the book for the Broadway-bound musical TUCK EVERLASTING.

She will executive produce alongside Pasek & Paul and AMERICAN BEAUTY's Bruce Cohen.

Pasek & Paul are the writers behind the musical adaptations of JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and A CHRISTMAS STORY, the shows DOGFIGHT and EDGES, the Broadway-bound DEAR EVAN HANSEN, and the cult musical TV drama SMASH. They have also written the upcoming film LA LA LAND, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.
