Spit It Out!, a new musical co-written by and starring Valerie Smaldone and Amy Coleman, opened at the Midtown International Theatre Festival on July 18th and will run through August 6th at the WorkShop Theatre (312 W. 36th St., 4th floor).

A Two Sides of a Coin production, the show is
a "comical and endearing look at an unlikely friendship between two women that develops when their paths in life collide as Kara Angelo (Smaldone), a career-driven successful television talk show host meets the down on her luck blues singer, Hanna Cohen (Coleman)," according to Spit It Out!'s website. As the show's tagline puts it, "When you're in the middle of a break-up, nobody hears you scream. Except your best friend."

As described on her website, Smaldone is a five time Billboard Magazine Award-winner, best known for holding the #1 position in the New York radio market as mid-day host of 106.7 Lite-FM. Among her prominent radio credits are co-creator, writer, producer and host of several nationally syndicated programs which featured interviews with top recording artists of our day, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Sting and Celine Dion. She is also a successful voice over-artist and has recorded over 1,000 voiceovers from commercials, to television news promos to movie trailers.

Coleman received Backstage Magazine's Best Vocalist of the Year award for her cabaret Face to the Wall, a piece set to the words and music of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. She fronts an all-female blues band called Sweet Potata (with whom she released the CD Soul Kiss), and recently released her first solo CD on Regular Records, entitled Flame On. Regionally, she has appeared in Jesus Christ Superstar, Little Shop of Horrors, and also played Janis Joplin in the original production of Beehive at the Village Gate. Coleman appeared as Vickie for three years in the hit off-Broadway production of The Last Session.
