Museum of the Moving Image presents a preview screening of Andrew Dosunmu's Mother of George, a family drama set amidst the Nigerian-American community in Brooklyn, New York. The event, tonight, September 12, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. will be accompanied by Q&A with Dosunmu moderated by Museum trustee and filmmaker Warrington Hudlin.

Adenike (Danai Gurira) and Avodele (Isaach de Bankolé) are a Nigerian couple living in Brooklyn. Following their joyous wedding celebration, complications arise from their inability to conceive a child, a devastating problem that leads Adenike to make a shocking decision that could either save her family or destroy it. An acclaimed photographer-turned-director, Andrew Dosunmu (Restless City), who was born in Nigeria, captures the nuances of this unique and fascinating culture by creating a beautiful, vibrant, and moving portrait of a couple whose joys and struggles are at once intimate and universal. Since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Cinematography award, Mother of George has received acclaim at New Directors / New Films and the recent BAMcinemaFest.

Mother of George will be released by Oscilliscope in theaters in New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles on September 20.

Tickets: $15 public / $9 Museum members / free for Silver Screen members and above. Order online at http://movingimage.us or call 718 777 6800 to reserve tickets.

The screening is part of Changing the Picture, sponsored by Time Warner, Inc., an ongoing series of screenings and discussions that celebrates and explores the work of film and television artists of color who are bringing diverse voices to the screen.
