Patrick Hamilton's Gaslight, (a.k.a Angel Street), the dark, Victorian melodrama, will be the next production at The Irish Repertory Theatre (132 West 22nd Street.) The production begins previews on May 9, 2007 and opens May 17, 2007, and is performed through July 8, 2007.  Irish Rep Artistic Director Charlotte Moore directs.

"Bella Manningham's devlishly attractive husband may be driving her insane with accusations of petty aberrations which may have been cleverly arranged by himself. When a mysterious police inspector arrrives and suggests that Jack Manningham is suspected of a black-hearted murder committed fifteen years ago in the very same house, the game of uncovering the necessary evidence begins.....," state Irish Rep notes.

The cast of Gaslight features multi-Tony Award-nominee Brian Murray (The Rivals, The Crucible), Laura Odeh (The Rivals), David Staller (Cabaret, Evita), Laoisa Sexton, and Patricia O'Connell (Waiting in the Wings, The Man Who Came to Dinner).

Gaslight was first produced at the John Golden Theatre in 1941 as Angel Street, starring Vincent Price and Judith Evelyn. George Cukor's Acadamy Award winning film version followed in 1944 and starred Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman and Angela Lansbury. Based on the play, it was a study of psychological dominance and abuse through manipulative words and actions.

As a novelist Patrick Hamilton made his debut at the age of nineteen with the Dickensian Monday Morning (1925). Craven House (1926), a story of the inmates of a boarding-house followed. It established his reputation on both sides of Atlantic. Hamilton's first theatrical success was Rope (1929), produced in the United States as Rope's End. In 1938, Gaslight gained a huge success and ran in the United States for almost three years (1942-44).

Set design is by James Morgan, with light design by Brian Nason, costume design by Martha Hally, sound design by Zachary Williamson, wig and hair design by Robert-Charles Vallance.
