Motown Legend Smokey Robinson Comes To St George Theatre 1/22
The legendary singer, songwriter, and record producer, Smokey Robinson will be featured at the 81st Anniversary Snowball Gala at the St. George Theatre on Saturday, January 22nd.
Singer, songwriter, and record producer, Smokey Robinson started out singing in local groups and in the early 1950s, he formed the Matadors, which later became the world famous Miracles. A chance meeting with record producer Berry Gordy, Jr. led to a contract with Motown Records, as well as an important working relationship. Smokey Robinson and The Miracles scored 27 pop-soul hits between 1960 and 1971. The Miracles' brightest moments on record, "Ooh Baby Baby", "The Tracks of My Tears" and "The Tears of a Clown" foremost among them - still kindle memories for those who came of age in the 1960s.
In 1972, Robinson parted ways with The Miracles, and both entities enjoyed continued success. Robinson's biggest solo hits, "Cruisin'" and "Being With You", came in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A fixture at Motown, he served as vice president until the company's sale to MCA in 1988. The mid-1980s were a difficult time for him as he battled a drug addiction. Robinson openly discussed this, as well as many other personal topics, in his 1989 autobiography Smokey: Inside My Life.
Robinson went on to win his first Grammy Award as a solo artist in 1987 for Best R&B Vocal Performance. That same year he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2006 was selected to be a Kennedy Center Honoree for his contributions to the arts and American culture.
