Molly Regan, who played Joan in the world premiere of John Kolvenbach's new comedy drama Love Song, will temporarily step into the shoes of Kristen Johnston, who in the opening week of the European premiere in London suffered serious medical problems as a result of which she has had to undergo surgery.
Regan, who created the role at the legendary Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Chicago, in June, has flown in at a day's notice to play Joan while Johnston recuperates.
Johnston was taken seriously ill on Wednesday night with an erupted duodenal ulcer, which had to be operated on immediately. Although she is determined to return to the production as soon as she can, once discharged from hospital the producers anticipate that she will need a period of recovery. However, it is expected that she will be able to return to the production before Christmas.
On December 11th, Regan joins the company to perform as Joan, alongside Neve Campbell, Cillian Murphy and Michael McKean.
John Crowley's production of Love Song opened at the New Ambassadors Theatre last week (December 4th) and is produced in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions, Robert G Bartner and Boyett Ostar Productions.
Regan has been a member of the Steppenwolf ensemble since 1985, most recently directing Pacific and appearing in many productions including Maria Arndt, David Copperfield, The Glass Menagerie, Time of My Life, Another Time (Jeff Award), Earthly Possessions, Three Sisters, Aunt Dan and Lemon, Miss Julie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, You Can't Take It with You and Reckless. On Broadway, she appeared in Stepping Out and The Crucible. Off-Broadway, she appeared in fellow ensemble member Austin Pendleton's Booth, as well as The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Seagull, Say Goodnight, Gracie, Etiquette and Personals. She has also appeared in many regional, film and TV projects.
