MoMA presents World Premiere of Film About Maria Irene Fornes: THE REST I MAKE UP

Maria Irene Fornes is recognized as one of America's most influential playwrights and teachers, even if she is not among the most well known. Though she gradually stopped writing due to dementia, a chance encounter with filmmaker Michelle Memran reignited her spontaneous creative spirit and triggered a decade-long collaboration that picked up "where the pen left off". The duo travel from NY to Havana, Miami to Seattle, exploring Fornes's remembered past and their shared present. Theater luminaries such as Edward Albee, Ellen Stewart, Paula Vogel, Lanford Wilson, and others weigh in on Fornes's important contributions. The film is ultimately a story of love, connection, and creativity that persists even in the face of forgetting.

A headline on the cover of The Village Voice once read, "Irene Fornes is America's Great Unknown Playwright". Winner of nine Obie Awards, Maria Irene Fornes has written over 40 plays, many of which she directed, and is regarded as one of the most influential writing teachers across the country. Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre devoted its entire 1999-2000 season to her work, and her epic What of the Night? was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. At the vanguard of the nascent Off-Off Broadway experimental theater movement in NYC, the incomparable Cuban-American playwright is often referred to as American theater's "Mother Avant-Garde".

Doc Fortnight 2018

February 15, 2018-February 26, 2018
The Museum of Modern Art (The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters)

Doc Fortnight, MoMA's annual international festival of nonfiction film, returns for its 17th year with 12 days of innovative approaches to documentary filmmaking from February 15-26. Featuring a diverse assortment of feature and short films from across the globe, the festival continues to highlight the vibrant and varied styles of independent filmmakers-both emerging and established-around the world.

Recognizing the recent passing of award-winning filmmaker, Jonathan Demme, this year's festival includes a retrospective of several documentaries made during his prolific career. At a time of escalating sociopolitical tension, Doc Fortnight continues its history of showcasing nonfiction film that challenges our perceptions of the changing world and the traditional model of documentary cinema.

Organized by Kathy Brew, Guest Curator, with Gianna Collier-Pitts The exhibition is supported by the Annual Film Fund.
