MoMA Presents Kino! 2011: New Films from Germany 4/27-5/2

By:

The Museum of Modern Art announces Kino! 2011: New Films from Germany, the 32nd edition of the annual survey of recent German cinema, running April 27 through May 2, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. The exhibition-including narrative and documentary features and shorts-opens with the New York premiere of Drei (Three) (2010), the most recent film by one of Germany's most internationally celebrated writer/directors, Kino! veteran Tom Tykwer. Drei (Three), Tykwer's 21st-century valentine to Berlin, is an adult romantic comedy that puts a new twist on the notion of togetherness. Tykwer will be in attendance on April 27 to introduce the film.

This year's selection includes Germany's enormously popular serialized television movie The Weissensee Saga: A Berlin Love Story, a full-bodied melodrama about what happens to two families when the scion of one-whose members are part of the state secret police-falls in love with the daughter of dissidents. Two documentaries explore culturally influential German personalities: How to Make a Book with Steidl examines the life of art book publisher Gerhard Steidl and features appearances by a number of contemporary artists; and Dancing Dreams showcases the work of the late choreographer Pina Bausch.
