NEW YORK STREETS: A DOWN UNDER VIEW OF THE BIG APPLE- David Hinchliffe April 8th to May 7th, 2011

The Michael Ingbar Gallery, in celebration of its twenty-fifth anniversary, presents "New York Streets: A Down Under View of the Big Apple," the first U.S. solo exhibition of Australian artist David Hinchliffe.

The exhibition, opening on Friday, April 8th, features new oil paintings revealing views of everyday New York life from Hinchliffe's exciting and foreign perspective. His work captures the light, shade and shapes of the city teeming with familiar faces: traffic cops, doormen, street vendors, tourists, lovers and workers. These scenes are affectionately painted with a local's knowledge and are simultaneously infused with the exhilaration of a visitor. His palette is light and subtle, favoring a monochromatic and atmospheric interpretation of his subject.

A native of Brisbane, Australia, the artist considers New York his second home after briefly living in the city in the 1970s followed by frequent visits. Hinchliffe's thirty year career as a painter is complemented by his political involvement in local Australian government. The artist has had over thirty solo exhibitions in Australia.

Concurrently, Hinchliffe's work will be featured in an exhibition in the Monash Room of the Australian Consulate. The show responds to the devastating floods earlier this year, which saw massive damage to the artist's home town. A departure from Hinchliffe's usual streetscapes, the paintings depict a landscape battered by flood, majestically revealing the force of nature's fury. "Deluge" will benefit the Queensland Disaster Relief Appeal. The opening reception will take place on Wednesday, April 6th at 6:00 pm and will be hosted by Australian Consul General, Phillip Scanlan AM. RSVP is required by April 4th by calling (212) 351-6550. The exhibition is open by appointment only all other times.
