RED BULL THEATER is dedicated to the presentation of vital and imaginative
productions of heightened language plays and to the development of new plays
written in a similar vein. With a special focus on the Jacobean plays of
Shakespeare and his contemporaries, Red Bull Theater aspires to challenge the
intellect and engage the imagination of today's theatergoers through
language-based, company-created, resonantly provocative stagings of great
classic stories. Their inaugural production, Pericles, was a critical and
audience success. Pericles received unanimous raves, from online reviews
to the major press: Margo Jefferson of The New York Times called it "The
Stuff of Dreams" and "Enchanting". Time Out New York said the production
was "Inspired" playing a twice-extended two month Off Broadway run at The
Culture Project.
Watch for more news about this up and coming new company and their next
full production, the rarely performed Jacobean masterpiece, The Revenger's
Tragedy, scheduled to open November 28, 2005 at The Culture Project. The
Revenger's Tragedy was recently read by Red Bull Theater to a standing room only
crowd, with a cast that featured Tony-Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg
(Pillowman), Howard Overshown (Yellowman), and Obie Award-winner Ty Jones (The
Blacks).
Written just a few years after Hamlet, The Revenger's Tragedy is a
pot-boiling pastiche of the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries a
provocative cross between Measure for Measure and Titus Andronicus. A
rollicking and resonant examination of the balance humanity must strike between
the social need for justice and the animal desire for vengeance, Red Bull
Theater's creative team is looking forward to sharing this marvelously macabre
play with you.
