Youngsters can take their First Step to Stardom as the Maltz Jupiter Theatre hosts open auditions for two shows in its 2010/2011 season, Where Art Comes to Life.
The theatre will audition youngsters May 1 for its productions of Academy and The Sound of Music. Boys and girls ages 4-18 are invited to audition for the shows.
"This is so exciting," said Andrew Kato, artistic director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. "We know there is the potential for some great talent to be discovered right here in our own community."
First Step to Stardom, sponsored by WPEC-Channel 12 and PBG Lifestyle magazine, is the perfect opportunity for children to learn the nuances of auditioning and stage presence, Kato said.
And what if kids never have performed professionally? That's no problem. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre Conservatory of Performing Arts' team of Broadway-caliber instructors will set them at ease with two Saturday audition workshops, scheduled for 3-4 p.m. April 17 and April 24 at the theatre. Attendance is optional, but recommended.
First Step to Stardom takes place from noon-8 p.m. Saturday, May 1. Children will be given a two-hour time frame in which to be at the theatre. Children who have headshots are encouraged to bring them; otherwise, Maltz Jupiter Theatre staff will be on hand to take pictures.
Here is a look at the shows for which children will audition:
Academy
At St. Edward's Academy, two seniors make a harmless bet on whether they can influence an unsuspecting freshman to break a few rules to succeed. But when the transaction goes recklessly out of control, the boys become entangled in a fight for their own academic and personal survival. Inspired by Goethe's Faust, Academy is a pop chamber musical about boys learning to become
men - and remaining true to themselves. PG-Rated
