Longhouse Projects Opens Special Mitsuko Miwa Exhibit Today

By:

Longhouse Projects is pleased to present a special project by Mitsuko Miwa. On view will be Beyond the Hill, a large-scale painting from 1988, and works from three of her recent series: Bugaboo, Statue and Column.

For the last 30 years, Miwa has concerned herself with dissecting a variety of technical and conceptual doctrines observed in painting throughout history. This project brings together an earlier painting with recent works, uncovering different methodologies that are used to represent three-dimensional subjects in two-dimensions. In Beyond the Hill, Miwa depicts the back and profile of Andy Warhol, painted from a photograph, a year after his death. Additionally, photo-collage elements are applied to a primed and pencil-gridded portion left exposed on the canvas, unmasking its layers of flatness. In contrast, the Bugaboos, the Statues and the Columns rely on the artist's hand-modeled, clay forms as their subject. The material dissimilarities between these series appose surface and depth, as well. While Statue and Column employ impasto oil paint on canvas, Bugaboo is created with offset printing and watercolors on paper.

Mitsuko Miwa born 1958, Nagoya, Japan, lives and works in Nagoya. Her work has been shown extensively in Japan at public institutions such as: The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama, Kangawa, Japan; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Japan; National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan; National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan; Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, Japan; National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi, India; Shoto Museum of Art, Tokyo, Japan; and Nagoya City Art Museum, Nagoya, Japan. Her work is included in the public collections of Shiseido Art House, Kakegawa, Japan; National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Japan; Frederick R. Weiseman Art Foundation, Los Angeles, CA and The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama, Hayama, Japan.
