Of the recording’s inspiration, Brandon Victor Dixon commented, "’Hotel California’ is one of the first rock songs I fell for. My father used to drop me off at school every morning on his way to work and we always listened to Imus in the Morning. Imus was playing it one day and my Dad noticed me bopping to it as I was reading my book; he was always asking me to get my head out of the book when I was with him. As he turned it up, I put the book down, and we kept bopping together. I've loved it ever since. When I heard Kaveh Rastegar’s arrangement, I just had to record a version in homage to the memory. The song is timeless and with Michael Valerio’s cinematic strings I think we manage to capture its mystique and grandeur.”

In an interview with BroadwayWorld, Dixon shared what listeners can expect from his album, which includes a mix of original and cover songs. "[The album is] very much connected to the style of music with which people are familiar with me being associated: classics, standards, and traditional soul and R&B. A lot of the traditional soul and R&B that you're used to hearing from me is Motown or Motown-related such as Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles. But then there's also Sondheim and things from traditional musicals. So you get a blend of styles." Check out the full interview here.
